How Social Media Effect Society
Have you asked yourself what is Social Media? Well after researches and articles, social media is networking site where people get together and interact using a highly open and scalable communication techniques. Social media is media for social communication, using highly accessible and scalable communication techniques, it is mostly a web based, like Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, YouTube and Google. Also Social media can be more than web based for example text messaging, news papers, and using cell phone. The Social media has brought a lot and it has brought more good than harm. In this essay I am going to discuss the impacts of social media to our day to day life.
There more than billions and billions people on social media every day. For instance some marketing company’s sell their products through social media. Some people just use social media for fun or to just waste lack of time. Some people use social media to steal identity and do more stuff to it, while others are putting more of their information in. Social media can be helpful or it can be dangerous. People don’t know what’s behind it. I know some people that are online on Facebook the whole time nothing else, but there some others are selling their products. According to the Social media revolution 2 video it said,”1 Out of 8 couples married in the U.S. met via social media”.
Anyone worldwide can use social media. Teens and adult mostly use it for fun, but college students use it to communicate or to learn. According to BLANKENSHIP, MARK. “How Social Media can and should impact higher education.” Mar 2011, Academic Search Premier. Web. Apr.2011.(40). He mentions that the survey revealed that more than 80% use social media in some capacity and more than half use the tools as part of their teaching. More than a million worldwide use social media, even the kids now a day use it in some way. Mostly social media is used for businesses.
Social media is done by an individual or groups of individuals for a product or service. Also is used for non- profits as well as political awareness or personal interest. According to the book authors Casebier, Allan, and Janet J. Casebier.“Social Responsibilities of the mass media”. Print. Page xiii. They said that “everyone acknowledges that the mass media have social responsibilities, but how far do such responsibilities extend? That’s so true and hard to see it in this way.
The term social media has been used widely a lot and for so many purposes, it loses its meaning. Social media is the tools we are using for communication and interacting. You can also say social networking. Although the term social media is new, no buddy knows the exact day it started. We need to look further back in human history, than we might find out when it starred.
The big question is what is the issue? According to ht epricayright.org nearly 8.4 million people have their identity stolen in 2007, and it will increase over the years. 39% of people trust there social networking sit with their information. “According to the Gartner study the 2006 victim population was at 15 million victims. That means every minute about 28 ½ people become a new victim of this crime or a new victim in just over 2 seconds. Studies on the total cost of identity theft vary”. We have to be a wear what we share with other people and what we put in to social networking sits. Your identity is very important and you can lose a lot if become a victim.
Many hackers try to get your information as possible as they can. There are many ways they can figure it out. Some might make some fake social networking sit in order of them to get that information. Some might send you a link and tell you that “you won a price” or it might say something different. Also some might send you a link and if you click on it your information might be shown to them. Most of us today including me put our true information on any web or social networking sit. Sometimes we get stupid calls for unknown people and all ways they trying to get your information.
Everyone have the right to hide their privacy. Privacy means the information that you don’t want to share with other people. Privacy is the right of people to make personal decisions regarding their own intimate matters. Also it can be the state of being free from public attention. So why some people trying to get into your privacy? United State passed Act of 1974, a strong limit on the government’s ability to invade people’s privacy, but still some people are trying to hack your information.
People on social networking sites make fake information to make you believe who every they want you to believe they are. Many teens fell for it. Many people use other people pictures, and pretend that this is who they are with fake information and it misleads people. Every one of us put their pictures on facebook or any other social networking sites. We upload pictures every day for others to see it. A lot of people don’t know that their pictures might or might not been using in a different account. How secure is it when millions and millions people using social networking sit like Facebook or any other sites?
The second big issue is kid and teens waste their time on social networking. Social media has brought us in a different world. A world that is different from each one of us. According to social Media & Mobile Internet use Among Teens and Young Adults teens and young adults in age 12 to 29 uses social networking more than any ages. Many younger kids become addicted to it if they use social media too much. I personally use it and it had brought me to different world today. Some kids when they become addicted to it they don’t listen to their parent, or any one and that can change their life style.
The social media had brought a lot and it had brought some of benefits. There are some befits to student on social media according to Blankenship, Mark. He mentions that “Social media often also inspire new creativity in the way subjects are taught. Jeremy Fiebig, an assistant professor of theater at the University of North Carolina/Fayetteville State University, has used the interactive online video game Second Life to drop his students into a remarkably faithful online replication of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, which was recently added to the game's online universe”. Some benefits of social media are the bet branding tool that is used for agencies, improve your communication skills and provides the opportunity to build relationships in the most efficient way possible because people want to work with people that they know, like and trust. All of these benefits are mostly for ad agency new business.
Social media have a no limited time and they will still stay with us forever. According to Social Media Revolution 2 video it mentions that “Facebook has reached 500,000,000 users and it will keep growing”. If Facebook were a country it would be the 3rd largest country. Imagine that, yet that mean it’s has more population then United States. The fastest growing segment on facebook is 45-65years- old females, it’s unbelievable and it’s still growing. Also YouTube is the 2nd largest search engine in the world. 200, 00 videos update per day. About 348 million hits a day in YouTube. These numbers will increase as time goes by. It just YouTube and Facebook but imagine all the other sites. We are no longer looking for news, the news find us and we will no longer searching for products and services. They will find us via social media.
The question is can social media be safe for our teens? Many people argue about it and it’s still debatable. 65% of our teens use an online social networking site. Mostly all of them trust social networking sites and put their true information in, but you never know what’s behind it. Kids can be addicted to social media and spend their whole time. Also kids spend a lot of time on text, internet, cell phones and social networking. Many of these kids don’t do well in school and become less educated. Addiction can be good in one way, and also it can be bad in the other way. People never realize there addicted on something until someone else tells them or they might figure it out by them self.
Can we find some solution for this entire social media mass? Well we might find couple solution, but it won’t stop the power of social media. It is not the media job to protect your identity it is your job to protect your identity. Everyone needs to know what kind of information they putting out there and letting others share it. Is your job to protect yourself from the odd people that are sending you fake email every time, because they won’t stop hunting you. Can the government help? Probably they doing their bets yet still people won’t stop still identities.
Every day many people get their identity stolen and might or might not know who did it. Everyone needs to know what’s right and what’s wrong before you make a choice. We need to teach our kids not to spend a lot who time on social networking and to do something that will help them in the future. If our kids don’t learn the right things from their family or friends then who else are they going to learn from? If you do the right things there are possibilities that they will do it also. We need to put our pictures in privacy so that only our friends can see it not any other strangers.
Over all, social media is networking site where people get together and act together using an extremely open and scalable communication techniques. Social media is media of communication. Social media can be mostly anything not just a web based but mostly is a web based. It can be helpful in my different ways and it also can be disadvantage in many ways. There is a lot of problems on social media people still others identities, other people create fake information with your pictures and kids waste lake of time on social media. There is a lot is going on in this world and the only best way we can figure it out is by social media. All of these problems should end now, and let’s be more careful about what we do on the internet.
